Current federal guidelines just don't cut itCurrently, maximum calories and rules for school lunches are as followed:
|
SOME school lunch PROBLEMS CAN BE LINKED TO THE FOOD SUPPLIERS
- The companies Aramark, Compass Group, and Sodexo are contracted by the government to provide for the school lunch program
- Meals are pre-made, pre-packaged, and frozen, then shipped off to schools to be reheated
- Advancements in food production lead to less expensive to produce, less nutritious, and poorer quality tasting food (alternatively, healthier foods are more expensive to produce)
- Food made "in house" (at the school itself) are increasingly rare to find, due to such advancements
AND THEN THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TYPE OF REGULATION....
- 23,000 children made ill from eating school lunch from 1998 to 2007
- 2009: Sodexo agreed to $20 million settlement for not reimbursing several NY school districts for lunches
- A 2009 report by USA Today found that safety standards for school meat is lower than those of fast food restaurants
- Report also found chicken used in lunches were purchased from Campbell's that would've become compost or pet food
- Some districts have "pouring rights" with the CocaCola Company or PepsiCo to support school funding needs
