Coco Chanel: philosophy for revolution
written by benny chan
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was known as the most influential person of the 20th century, according to Time’s Magazine, and the founder of the Chanel luxury brand. She rose to being the most influential person because of her philosophy on how women should dress. She used her philosophy in fashion and made women think of themselves first rather than how they look for men. Through her actions, Chanel contributed to the change of the developing fashion industry.
Although Chanel faced difficulties because of her unfamiliar design of fashion and WWI period, Chanel continued her philosophy because she believed that, "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different". She did this by using comfortable fabric that men would wear into women’s clothing, such as wool, and said that, "Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury". She also incorporated some of men’s style clothing like the formal suits and originated the classic jersey suits for women. This lead to a big uproar because women wearing pants was unheard of in Chanel’s time, but people soon came to like the Chanel style and supported her philosophy.
With much support, Chanel opened many shops selling her own clothes design. Her first shop opened in France, Paris on 1913 (Coco Chanel. Biography, Fashion Pioneer). This shop started her revolution in the fashion industry and grew to become known as a luxury brand, Chanel. So Chanel is not just selling different design of clothes, she is selling her philosophy. Her philosophy helping women think of themselves first instead of how they look to men.
