Bullying is harmful towards students well being physically and emotionally. Bullying can cause victims to come home with injuries, get stomachaches, and headaches. Also many victims show signs of being depressed, stressed, and fearful. These harmful threats not only affect student during their school years, but they will have long lasting effects on their lives. The best way to fight against bullying to directly address the problem before it starts. There are a variety of steps a school can do to make school a safer environment for all students.
Conduct a School Survey
Conduct a study in your school to determine how frequently bullying occurs, when it happens, and where it happens. Assess how many students are victims, bullies, possums, and protectors. After gathering all data, determine the problem and think of ideas to improve the situation, whether it may be influencing possums to become protectors or find out why bullies want to hurt others.
Engage Schools, Parents, and Youth
One person cannot stop bullying. Get the community involved in sending a message against bullying. Form an awareness campaign on anti-bullying and target all people in the communities like parents, school staff, students, and city council. Have a meeting in a school to suggests ideas on creating a bullying prevention program.
Create Policies and Rules
Create a mission statement, code of conduct, and bullying reporting system in school. Explain not only what these policies are trying to do, but why these policies are beneficial to everybody's health, learning environment, and overall well-being; physically and emotionally.
Build a Safe Environment
Schools need to acknowledge that there is a bullying problem and not ignore it. Schools should promote respect, tolerance, and acceptance to all kinds of people. Adults need to not be so ignorant and actually listen to what students have to say about their situations. Use staff meeting, assemblies, and parent meetings to create a positive climate at school.
Schools need to form a safe environment where students are not afraid to report bullying. Many possums are not protectors because they themselves have a fear of being bullying. So a good option is to have the bullying reporting system be anonymous. By implementing a effective bullying reporting system, schools can encourage more people to be protectors.
Educate Students, Parents, and School Staff
The consequences and effects of bullying needs to be added into the curriculum of schools. Not only students are possums, teachers and other school staff can also be steer clear of a bullying situation even though they spot it in front of them. Teachers and staff need to be supportive of anti-bullying efforts created in schools. Teachers also need be trained in handling bullying situations before it gets worse. If adults do not express their objection towards bullying, the bully will think that there is nothing wrong with their harmful actions towards the victims. Therefore to stop bullying, teachers and staff need start becoming the protectors of students to ensure a safe learning environment.
Communicate
Students, Teachers, School Staff, and Parents need to learn to communicate better. Teachers and Staff need to be open to communicating about bullying to students. They need to start being supporters rather than bystander. Not only victims need help, but bullies too. Bullies also have emotional and insecurity problem that make them put down victims day after day. Schools staff, Parents, and other fellow students need to be a support system to give bullies and victims more confidence in themselves
