Bill gates: the economist
written by adam kuo
William "Bill" Gates III, renowned entrepreneur, former CEO, and philanthropist, is well-known for founding and establishing the Microsoft Corporation and revolutionizing modern computing. With a combination of sheer wits and seeing "how the world can be made better with the strategic and daring use of time, talent and resource" (Carter, "35 People Who Made A Difference"), he helped thrust the world into the modern technological age and made personal computers into the quintessential tools they are today.
Bill started his career by writing a programming language for microcomputers before dropping out of Harvard. With his close friend Paul Allen by his side, they both started Microsoft, and not long after started to licensed software for IBM to use in their computer system. The duo also wrote their own program, Windows, for personal computers. Aside from computing, Gates's business model is one that many seek to copy after. He displayed "a penchant for business that would make even the most battle scarred trench man proud" (Chandy, "Bill Gates Biography"), alongside his desire for competition and standing out among his competitors.
Such ardor and devotion has made Windows the most widely used operating system in computers around the world, with an almost 80% market share of all operating systems used currently (NetMarketShare). It has also led Gates to be consistently named one of the richest men in the world. Nonetheless, he continues to be an influential player in today's technologically-driven society and has made the world a better, more connected place to live in.
