COco CHanel: Aesthetics
written by brilliant hua
Coco Chanel designed her fashion pieces around a powerful, yet refreshingly logical statement “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury” (Chanel). A visionary, Chanel created aesthetic pieces that were elegant and simple. She is famous for her timeless designs, trademark suits, and little black dresses. Chanel’s fashion is a reminder that even practical items can be beautiful.
Chanel’s fashion roots were forged from a past that was anything but luxurious. Born as Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in France, 1883, Chanel was placed in an orphanage and taught to sew by nuns. She started out selling hats in 1910 and later launched her perfume, Chanel No. 5, in 1920. She continued launching the elements of her fashion that made her famous throughout the 1920’s, including her suits and the famous little black dress. Her designs were revolutionary for the time, including elements from men’s clothes and placing comfort over the constraints of then-popular fashions. It was Chanel’s fashion that helped woman transition from corset and constraining fashion pieces of the time.
Chanel’s fashion legacy is one that makes millions of dollars in sales each year. Her success is pitted in the concept of her designs – comfort and practical pieces that are stylish and beautiful. It is because of Chanel’s revolutionary ideas that woman have so many options of style today. Her legacy in fashion lives on, and the idea behind Chanel items of comfort and quality combined with simple elegance remains the same.
